Kids Yoga en Español
with Jen Fink Oppenheimer

Have you ever heard the saying children are like sponges? From a very early age children are able to absorb massive amounts of information from their surroundings. Children love nothing more than to share something new they learned with anyone who will listen. Why not incorporate another language into the practice of yoga?
This four hour course is designed to provide you with fun and creative ways to bring Spanish into your kids yoga classes. Names of poses, new songs and games, all presented in Spanish, will add a new layer of fun to your classes. And, you can improve your own language skills at the same time! Kids Yoga en Español is double the fun!
Some important facts to consider:
- Spanish is the second most common language in the United States after English and the most widely taught non-English language in the country.
- Studies show that learning more than one language allows children to recognize a cultural connection, promoting understanding and tolerance of differences. Children who are bilingual are better able to appreciate cultural, linguistic, and social diversity.
When teaching yoga to children it is easy to incorporate small amounts of Spanish words, phrases and songs into your class. Even if you remember nothing from your high school Spanish classes, you can still speak Spanish in your kids yoga class!
What you will learn:
- Songs and routines to use throughout your classes that make speaking and learning Spanish fun
- Names of yoga poses in Spanish
- Games to play in Spanish that reinforce basic vocabulary such as numbers/counting, body parts, and pose names
- Yoga art projects and activities that include vocabulary associated with colors, counting and names
- Worksheets for students to use in class and practice at home
- Lists of common words in Spanish to help in lesson planning and curriculum development
Date: Saturday, March 20th, 2:00 - 6:00pm
Fee: $100, includes course manual

Teaching Yoga to Children with Autism and Developmental Delays: Strategies for Parents and Teachers
with Deborah Joy Gruber, MEd, PhD

Very often, children with Autism and Developmental Delays are not engaging in physical activity such as yoga to the level of their typical peers. This 3 hour workshop will include an introduction to Autism and effective behavioral strategies. Furthermore, a rationale for including children on the Autism spectrum will be introduced and discussed. You'll learn strategies to help keep these kids engaged alongside their typical peers, and be able to apply your knowledge in a meaningful way, not only to children with Autism and developmental delays, but also to a variety of populations.

Are you ever frustrated by the behavior of your students? Ever frustrated by your own reaction to their behavior? Feel like you don't want to yell but don't know what else to do? Wish you could spend more time on content and less on classroom management?
The Compassionate Classroom workshop will give you tools and techniques to keep your students engaged through cooperation rather than control. You will learn to teach classes in a way that shows compassion and respect for all children, and use powerful communication strategies to create an environment of mutual trust.
Our goal is to provide all children with a sense of internal discipline, and offer teachers alternatives to punishment methods that serve to re-orient students to activities rather than ostracize them. Avoid unnecessary conflict and power struggles with your students and you will be amazed at how much time you can dedicate to learning!
This course meets Bent On Learning's required Classroom Management training segment.

Her Masters Degree in Education and Youth Development, as well as spending 8 years studying and practicing yoga, inspired Jen to couple her twin passions of education and yoga to impart a sense of wellbeing, self-esteem and continual joy in learning to children. She became certified through The Center for Yoga Studies at Sonic Yoga, as well as taking numerous children's yoga courses and workshops, and immediately knew that she had found the work she would do forever.
